1987, Kay and Vern Haggard (Hockey)

Kay and Vern Haggard were nominated to the Hall of Fame for their contributions to hockey.

Kay started her extensive hockey career in 1976 as a casual time keeper and by 1977 she was promoted to head time keeper. In this capacity she was responsible for scheduling time keepers for all games and training new volunteers. She also assisted with the Old Timer organization. Not only did Kay show her support for hockey through time keeping but she served on the executive of Whitehorse Minor Hockey Association as their publicity director. She was well known for being fair and supportive to all children involved in hockey.

Vern started his Yukon hockey involvement in 1976 by initiating the Old Timers Hockey League and serving as their first president until 1980. He also spent many hours organizing the annual Whitehorse Old Timer tournaments and travel to many "outside" tournaments. In 1981, Vern became a certified referee and began refereeing Minor Hockey. He was also a dedicated minor hockey coach from 1981 to 1991 and in 1982 he coached the Midget "B" team at an international tournament in Sweden.

Both Kay and Vern have continued their involvement in hockey since their induction in 1987. Kay has served as the Yukon Amateur Hockey Association President and Vern has continued coaching and instructing coaching clinics.
