Lionel Stokes was inducted to the Hall of Fame for his accomplishments
in the sport of curling.
Lionel began curling on his high school team in Alberta and in 1959 he
moved to the Yukon and continued to curl. Until 1975 the only way
the Yukon could enter the Canadian Curling Championship Playdowns
was by qualifying at the BC Interior Playdowns. Lionel competed
in these playdowns ten times from 1960 to 1974 as lead skip. Through
this experience he became a renowned team player, good sport and
dedicated curling organizer. In 1975 Yukon and North West Territories
were granted entry to the Canadian Championships. Lionel curled at
these Championships in 1975 as lead and 1977 as second. In 1977 Lionel
was voted All-Star Second at the Canadian Brier. In 1973 and 1974 Lionel
and his team toured Europe on a goodwill curling marathon that was
successful in gaining Yukon and Canadian recognition worldwide.
Another highlight of Lionel's curling career was his team's win at the
1981 Peace Country Curling Classic.
In addition to his athletic ability, Lionel spent many years
serving curling committees, organizing curling events and he also
initiated the Bert Boyd Memorial Trophy.
