Ted Stephens and team head to Memorial Cup

Stephens and his team theMoncton Wildcats battered the Sea Dogs with a 7-4 victory to earn thePresidents Cup and a trip to Brandon, Man. on Monday evening.

They earned the QMJHL title bywinning the final series 4-2.

Stephens could not be reachedfor comment, as the team is en route to Brandon for the tournament.

The achievement marks the firsttime a born-and-raised Yukoner has made it to the Memorial Cup. Stephens isalso the only Yukon player to make it into the QMJHL.

The only previous Yukonresident to make it into the tournament was Jarrett Deuling, who in 1992 and1994 hoisted the trophy with the Kamloops Blazers. Deuling, originally fromVernon, B.C. was with the team from 1991 to 1994.

Stephens will be the firstYukoner in nearly two decades to head to the Memorial Cup tournament.

For the Wildcats, tournamentplay kicks off against the Calgary Hitmen on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Attending the tournament alongwith the Wildcats will be WHL champions the Calgary Hitmen, host team theBrandon Wheat Kings and the OHL champion Windsor Spitfires.
